BUTLER, GEORGIA — Taylor County High School has earned the Georgia Department of Education’s Math Leader Award. This honor celebrates Taylor County High School’s exceptional growth in student performance on the Algebra: Concepts and Connections End-of-Course Test during the 2023-2024 academic year.
Georgia State School Superintendent Richard Woods visited Taylor County High School on Thursday, December 5, 2024 to present TCHS with the Math Leader award banner in person. The Math Leader award acknowledges schools that have excelled in improving the percentage of students scoring at the Proficient Learner level or above in mathematics. Superintendent Richard Woods congratulated TCHS students, teachers, leaders, school system, and community for this achievement. Students who tested in Algebra last year and their Algebra teacher, Mrs. Sallie Newman, attended Superintendent Woods’ presentation.
Taylor County School System Superintendent Jennifer Albritton addressed the gathered students and staff to express pride in their performance:
“You are an example to all of our students of what can happen with hard work. And to Mrs. Newman, I am so grateful for your willingness as an employee to do what was needed for our students. Thank you Mrs. Newman. You mean so much to our school system.”
Mrs. Newman has taught for 29 years and has been employed with the Taylor County School District since 2007. She has served as an elementary, middle, and high school math teacher and also has experience as an instructional coach. She is currently the department chair of Taylor County High School’s Mathematics Department and teaches upper level maths.
Mrs. Mahaley Parks, principal of TCHS, expressed her gratitude and admiration for the remarkable growth students demonstrated.
“I am so thankful for our students, Mrs. Newman, and the entire Taylor County team that made this possible. You have set the standard for classes to come,” Mrs. Parks told the students gathered for the award presentation. Students whose scores contributed to the high school’s growth received souvenir cups with candy from Mrs. Albritton and a pizza lunch provided by TCHS.
The award serves as a testament to the dedication of Taylor County High School’s educators, the perseverance of its students, and the unwavering support of the community. Congratulations to Taylor County High School for this remarkable accomplishment!
