NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARINGS – USE AND DISPOSAL OF CLOSED SCHOOL PROPERTY
The Taylor County Board of Education will hold two public hearings to discuss the use and demolition of the old Taylor County Elementary School located at 218 East Main Street, the old Taylor County Middle School located at 22 Oak Street, and the old Taylor County High School located at 24 Oak Street. After demolition of the old Taylor County Elementary School, the Board intends to use the site for construction of new athletic facilities, which may include a softball field, a track, a baseball field, a football field, and associated buildings, seating and lighting. At the old Taylor County Middle School and old Taylor County High School, the Board intends to use a portion of those buildings for the central office, board room, alternative school, professional development training rooms. The auditorium and associated gyms and athletic fields will continue to be utilized. All other buildings will be scheduled for demolition. The total costs of the demolition, construction of the new athletic facilities, and relocation of the central office are estimated at $20,000,000. The Board plans to fund the project with its recently issued bond proceeds as well as funding remaining from the previous construction project and future P.I.L.O.T payments. The new Taylor County grades 3-12 facility located at 52 R.L. McDougald Drive is being utilized to serve the 838 students who would have previously attended Taylor County Elementary School, Taylor County Middle School and Taylor County High School. As part of the meeting, we will discuss plans for use or disposal of the closed schools. Members of the public will have an opportunity for public comments to the Board. The public hearings will be held at the Central Office, 23 Mulberry Street, Butler. Members of the public are also invited to submit written comments or suggestions regarding the plans for the school sites, the system’s organizational pattern or school sizes by delivering them to the Central Office on or before December 9, 2024. The first hearing is scheduled for December 5, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. The additional hearing will be on December 9, 2024, at 6:00 p.m.
